VW Grand California Handbrake Stuck? What to do

This guide explains simple steps you can safely try to release it and get back on the road quickly

If your VW Grand California has been parked for a while, especially in cold, wet, or humid conditions, the handbrake can occasionally stick. Don’t worry — this can happen and is usually easy to resolve.

Step 1: Start the engine

Start the engine and allow the vehicle to run for a minute.

Step 2: Press the brake and select Drive (D)

With the engine running:

  • Keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal

  • Select Drive (D)

  • Ensure the area around the vehicle is clear

Step 3: Gently move forward

Slowly release the brake and apply very light acceleration.

Often you may hear a small click as the handbrake releases itself.

Step 4: Try Reverse (R) if needed

If the handbrake remains stuck:

  • Stop the vehicle

  • Keep your foot on the brake

  • Select Reverse (R)

  • Gently move backwards

Alternating between a gentle forward and reverse movement often frees the brake.

Important:

  • Do not use excessive acceleration

  • Do not repeatedly force the vehicle aggressively

  • Avoid wheel spinning or harsh inputs
