Who is responsible for tolls and vignettes?

Learn who is responsible for toll roads, vignettes, and road charges when renting a camper.

When travelling with a camper, you may encounter toll roads or need a vignette (road tax sticker). Here’s how it works.

Who pays for tolls and vignettes?

The renter is responsible for:

  • All toll road charges

  • Vignettes (e.g. for highways in certain countries)

  • Any low emission or environmental zone fees

How do I pay?

This depends on the country:

  • Toll roads: Paid at toll booths or online

  • Vignettes: Purchased online, at petrol stations, or at borders

  • Environmental zones: Often require online registration

Important to know

  • Always check local rules before entering a country

  • Some fines can be issued later if not paid correctly

  • These costs are not included in your rental

Fines or unpaid charges

If tolls or vignettes are not paid:

  • Fines may be issued

  • These will be charged to the renter after the trip

Good to know

  • We recommend planning your route in advance

  • Apps like Google Maps or Park4Night can help identify toll roads
